I had so much fun! |
My experience in Jamaica was exhilirating. I initially decided to participate in the trip to Jamaica just to get away. I was not really concerned with the service project involved with it. The service project we were required to do was to present to teen mothers in Jamaica on child care and protection at the womens center. Once we arrived at the womens center I was immediately ready to go home. I just wanted to go to the beach and walk the "Hip Strip", but once we met with the girls there that changed. Becomming a teen mother in Jamaica is very frowned upon and once pregnant girls are sent from their normal schools to a private school for pregnant girls. The girls were very smart and even though they were going through tough times, with society's views on them, they managed to maintain hope and the need to want more in life. Many of the girls knew exactly what they wanted to be upon graduating school. A lot of them wanted to go to college and become nurses, doctors, police officers and judges. It was very eye opening to see that these girls didn't let their circumstances stray them into a negative direction. They gave us their full attention when presenting and took in all the information we provided them with. Going to the beaches and walking the hip strip was fun but being a great influence on these girls was the best part of my trip JacQuana Loftin ENGL 317T |
